Visiting the Library

CAN I COME TO THE LIBRARY?  
Yes. Campus is open to enrolled students living in the Atlanta area who need to be on campus for reasons such as on-campus work, meetings with advisors or counselors, or use of campus services such as libraries, computing facilities, or dining venues. Access to the Libraries is by appointment

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM CLEAR TO COME TO THE LIBRARY? 
Prior to making an appointment, you need to be cleared to return to campus.
Please confirm your Return to Campus status.

HOW DO I MAKE AN ON-SITE APPOINTMENT?
See our on-site appointment page for more information and links to the appointment scheduler.
Appointments will be verified by library staff upon entry to the library.

WHAT ARE THE WOODRUFF LIBRARY BUILDING’S PHYSICAL HOURS?

  • Sunday: 11 am – 12 am
  • Monday-Thursday: 7:30 am – 12 am
  • Friday: 7:30 am – 6 pm
  • Saturday: 11 am - 6:00 pm

WHAT ARE THE VIRTUAL SERVICE HOURS?

  • Sunday: 12 pm – 8 pm
  • Monday-Thursday:  8 am – 8 pm
  • Friday: 8 am – 6 pm
  • Saturday: 11 am – 6 pm

Requesting, Borrowing, and Returning Materials

CAN I CHECK OUT BOOKS? 
Yes. Log into discoverE with your NetID and password to place requests. You will receive an email invitation to schedule a pickup appointment via the Library’s To Go services once materials are available.

CAN I CHECK OUT EQUIPMENT (CAMERAS, GPS DEVICES, LAPTOPS, PROJECTORS, ETC.)?
Yes, but our policies have changed. Use our equipment request form to view what is available and submit a borrowing request.

HOW DO I PICK UP MATERIALS?
Library staff will retrieve requested items and contact you via email to schedule a no-contact pick up appointment. Pick up will take place Monday-Friday by appointment only. Users cleared to return to campus may schedule a pickup appointment by selecting either Curbside or Grab and Go pickup. Users not yet cleared to return to campus are eligible for Curbside pickup.

HOW DO I RETURN MATERIALS?

We advise you to use the book drops at the following libraries to drop off your returns:
  • Robert W. Woodruff Library (Directions) Book drops are located on either side of the main entrance of the Woodruff Library. 
  • Pitts Theology Library (Directions) Book drops are located outside the 2nd floor entrance of the Rita Anne Rollins Building, near the Chemistry building.
  • Note: If you wish to return Music and Media Library equipment or media, please schedule an Equipment or Media Returns appointment.
  • If you are returning more than 50 books at once, please email ask@emory.libanswers.com. in advance of returning the items, to arrange for a no-contact drop off appointment.

CAN I RECALL A BOOK CHECKED OUT TO ANOTHER USER?
Recalls are available. However, library staff members are mediating recall requests to explore digital alternatives to mitigate delays that might occur due to the high percentage of students engaged in remote learning.

CAN A PROXY MAKE AN ON-SITE APPOINTMENT ON MY BEHALF AND PICK-UP MY BOOKS?

Remote Users

WHAT RESOURCES CAN I STILL USE IF I’M NOT ON CAMPUS?  
We have a wide range of online materials and e-books available for conducting research offsite. You may also send specific questions to ask Ask a Librarian.

CAN I REQUEST SCANS OF CHAPTERS OR ARTICLES?
We offer scans of chapters or articles from books owned by Emory Libraries. Please see our guide on electronic document delivery for instructions.

CAN I REQUEST BOOKS?  
We are currently developing policies and process for requesting physical materials (books) for remote users. Our preference is to find an an e-version if available for you to access. Please contact a subject librarian directly for purchase of an e-book or other alternative or use the purchase request form. You may also send specific questions to ask Ask a Librarian. We will find the best way to accommodate your request.

HOW DO I RETURN BOOKS? WILL THERE BE A FEE? 
If you are still in the Atlanta area, we advise you to use the book drops at the following libraries to drop off your returns:

  • If you are returning more than 50 books at once, please email ask@emory.libanswers.com in advance of returning the items to arrange for a no-contact drop off appointment.
If you have left the Atlanta area, you may self-ship the items using a courier of your choice that offers package tracking capabilities. Please be sure to include your name and contact information and use the following physical address to ensure delivery:

Services and Spaces

CAN I STUDY IN THE LIBRARY?  
Level 1 and 2 are available by reservation to undergraduate students. The Goizueta Business Library on Level 2 is available for Goizueta Business School BBA and graduate students.
Level 3 and the Matheson reading room are available to graduate students by reservation. 
All reservations are for up to three hours. Make a reservation

ARE THERE AREAS THAT ARE OFF LIMITS?  
Yes, the stacks (Levels 4-8) and the Music & Media Library are closed. The Media Lab workstations have moved to Level 1 and are available by reservation.

CAN I STUDY WITH OTHER PEOPLE? HOW MANY?  
Only if you can maintain the university’s social distancing guidelines

CAN I USE THE COMPUTER LAB/OTHER SPACES?  
Yes, computers are available by reservation. Computers are also available by reservation at the Computing Center at Cox Hall. 

Group studies are not available due to social distancing requirements. However, the rooms on Level 1 are available for individual students needing access to technology to participate in online courses while on campus.  Make a reservation.

CAN I MEET WITH A LIBRARIAN FOR ASSISTANCE WITH A RESEARCH PROJECT OR PAPER?
Yes. You can schedule an appointment with the subject librarian in your area, and they will be happy to meet with you remotely via Zoom. 

WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO PRINTING OR SCANNING IN THE LIBRARY?  IF SO, DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?
Yes, but you will need to make an appointment to enter the library. Appointments will be verified by library staff upon entry to the library. Learn more about our printing, copying, and scanning service.

DO I HAVE ACCESS TO RESERVES?  
Yes, regardless of whether you’re on campus or fully remote. Library staff have partnered with faculty to ensure electronic reserves are available to support teaching and learning including e-books, ejournal articles, and other online resources. To see your reserves, log in to Canvas, open your course, and click on the Library Course Reserves link.

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO REQUEST BOOKS FROM INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)?
Current Emory students, faculty, and staff may request electronic delivery of book chapters and journal articles from other libraries through ILLiad. Availability of ILL materials may depend on the opening of our partner libraries.

Food and Drink

CAN I EAT OR DRINK IN THE LIBRARY? 
No. In order to minimize the amount of time face covering would be removed, no food or beverages (other than water bottles) are permitted.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE YOU TAKING TO PROTECT LIBRARY USERS AND STAFF AND MINIMIZE RISK OF INFECTION?
