Professional Profile

Rob O'Reilly earned his BA in Political Science at the University of Delaware and his MA and PhD in Political Science, with a concentration in International Political Economy, from Emory University.

He is currently the Coordinator of Numeric Data Services in the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS).  The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship provides services that support the use of geospatial and quantitative data for both faculty and students and in both research and teaching.  It furthers the academic mission of scholarly inquiry by assisting users with locating relevant data and with assembling those data into usable forms, thus allowing users to test and evaluate arguments and hypotheses and to move from the realm of the abstract and theoretical to the realm of the empirical.  Reflecting the non-disciplinary nature of data, the ECDS assists researchers from departments and schools throughout the university.

Rob's specific duties focus on the quantitative side of data services, as he helps faculty and students identify and access relevant data resources and works with them to make the data usable in applications such as Stata, SAS, and SPSS. In addition, he is the university's representative to both the the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.  He also works with various librarians in purchasing additional resources to further build the library's collections of data.

Rob began working in data services in 2000, when he started working at the library's Electronic Data Center as a graduate student.  In 2003, after completing his PhD, he became head of the Data Center.  In 2013, the Data Center was merged into the Center for Digital Scholarship.

In addition his data-related work at Emory, Rob has also periodically done consulting work for CARE USA on projects pertaining to assessing program effectiveness and devising household surveys.
