Find a Quiet Study Area

Need a quiet place to study? The following are designated quiet study areas in the Woodruff Library Building.

Marian K. Heilbrun Music and Media Library

The Marian K. Heilbrun Music and Media Library (Level 4) offers large wooden tables, comfortable chairs, and media viewing stations in two large, open areas overlooking the Bowden Woodland and a wooded ravine alongside Asbury Circle.

Matheson Reading Room, Level 3, across the bridge (Candler Library)

The Matheson Reading Room offers large wooden tables in a large open area and comfortable chairs/sofas in two alcoves on either end of the room. The room is not carpeted and has high ceilings, so even the lowest tones echo and travel easily throughout the space. We ask for the utmost quiet in this area.

Adjacent to the Matheson Reading Room are three additional quiet spaces:

  • the newspaper reading room
  • the Candler Library lobby
  • room 304

Level 3 ECDS Specialized Workstations

This space across from the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship offers individual carrels with computer workstations and large tables.  Loud conversation is discouraged.

Floors 4, 5, & 8 (Stacks Tower)

Adjacent to the elevator lobbies on floors 4 and 5 are small study lounge areas with comfortable seating for quiet study.  Group study that requires conversation is discouraged.  The elevator bells and the coming/going of people in these high traffic areas cause some background noise.

On floors 4, 5, and 8 there are several individual carrels along the walls in the bookstacks area. Assigned carrels can be used if not in use with the understanding that users need to vacate if the assignee arrives.

Please limit group study that requires conversation to designated group study rooms on other floors.

Short-term Individual Study Rooms

Short-term Individual Study Rooms are available to Emory University students that have a short-term need for private study space to support virtual meetings, interviews, testing, or other solitary, short-term work.
