Using the Reading Room

We are glad that you are interested in doing research at Rose Library! Please use the directions on this page to allow us to prepare for your visit and to provide you with the best experience possible.

Before your appointment:

  • Create a user account
  • Request Materials
  • Make an Appointment

We highly recommend that you begin this process by requesting materials through our Library Search online catalog and ArchivesSpace database. You will be able to choose your materials directly from these tools and then be prompted to create an account in the Special Collections Request System, and schedule an appointment. For a step by step demonstration of how to find and request materials and register, please view the video tutorials below.

  • If you have already registered in the Special Collections Request System and would like to access your account, please click this link to the log-in page: aeon.library.emory.edu.

Please note that appointments are required for Saturdays.

  • When you arrive at Rose Library, you will be asked to show a photo ID. Generally this is a driver's license, but we also accept institutional IDs and passports-just make sure it has a photo!
  • Once you have registered with the Special Collections Request System, you can simply login going forward and request materials for upcoming visits by visiting the Special Collections Request System log-in screen.
  • Microfilm in Rose Library's collections is now located on the 1st floor of the Woodruff Library. Please check with the information desk on Level 1 to request and view microfilm. You do not need to make an appointment in Rose Library.
  • Please request any audiovisual materials (including audio recordings, video recordings, and film) in advance, so staff can ensure that access copies are available. There is at least a two-week wait, possibly more, for materials that are not currently digitized.
  • Researchers can access born-digital materials in the Rose Library's Reading Room with advance notice. Please consult the Digital Archives Access page for more information.
  • We also have available various guides to assist you in a subject-specific search, and these can be found on our [Research Guides and Tools] page.

You may have five items in the room with you at one time. We pull materials on the hour to accommodate researchers who discover additional materials during their visit, or for those who have a long list of requests. You can place further materials requests for pull times while you are researching in the reading room through the Request System.

We hope that using the Special Collections Request System is a smooth, easy process. If you do have questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to help!
