Request an Article or Chapter

Emory University faculty, staff, and graduate students can request article or chapter scans from certain Emory Libraries items in physical format.

What is Electronic Document Delivery (EDD)?

Electronic Document Delivery is a scanning service offered to Emory University faculty, staff, and graduate students at no cost. If you would like a PDF of an article or book chapter that Emory Libraries owns in physical format, you can place an Electronic Document Delivery request. Library staff will scan and upload the document to ILLiad (Emory's interlibrary loan and EDD system) and then notify you by email when the PDF is available.

Note that not all Emory libraries participate in the scanning service to the same degree, so some material may be ineligible for scanning.

Copyright Notice

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

Emory University reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Turnaround Time & Limits

  • Library staff will post your scans within 1-4 business days.
Extensive requests may require more processing time at the discretion of the library that owns the physical item.
  • You may request a maximum of 50 pages per request. However, all requests must comply with US copyright law, so scanning limits may be lower for some items. See Copyright Notice above.
  • You may place up to 5 scanning requests per business day.
  • This service does not apply to resources already available full-text online.
