What is Course Reserves?

Instructors make reserves materials such as PDFs, e-books, streaming media, and physical books available to their students via Course Reserves.

Students access their course materials directly through Canvas by clicking on the Library Course Reserves link within a course.

  • Within the Course Reserves website instructors can:
    • Add weblinks for Emory database content or external websites.
    • Upload PDFs. Please note that content placed on Course Reserves must comply with U.S. Copyright Law. Please see Reserves and Copyright for more information.
    • Place requests to be mediated by reserves staff, including creating and uploading PDFs, assessing copyright, and seeking e-resources.
    • Copy reserves item URL links for inclusion in assignments and syllabi.
    • Add item tags and manage materials lists.
  • Reserves requests for library-owned materials can also be placed directly through Library Search.
  • Visit the Course Reserves for Instructors page for instructions on adding/reactivating materials, Canvas access, and more.
  • Remember to place your requests before the start of the semester to avoid long turnaround times.

  • Access online materials (PDFs, website links) and physical reserves information through Canvas. Within your course click on Library Course Reserves to access the assigned materials. Please note:
    • If an item URL within a Canvas course assignment or syllabus isn't working, click on Library Course Reserves first and try the link again.

    • If you have further trouble accessing reserves materials, please send us an email at

  • Borrow physical reserves (books, media) for short-term loan from your library service desk. In Course Reserves, click on Show Details next to an item to find the call number, or find it in Library Search.
  • If your instructor does not use Canvas, go directly to the Course Reserves site to see your materials.

Physical Reserves Borrowing

  • Books: 2 hours, 3 hours, 1 day, or 3 days, depending on instructor. One renewal.
  • Audio and visual materials: One item for 3 hours, no renewals, library use only.
  • Equipment: One bundle for 3 days, no renewals (see the Equipment Guide for details).
  • Overdue fines: $1.00 per hour.
  • Items must be returned to a circulation desk, not a book drop.

Affordable Textbooks

Course Reserves is a part of the Emory Libraries Affordable Textbooks and Teaching Materials (ATTM) initiative, which provides solutions to the rising cost of textbooks, such as electronic textbooks, textbooks on reserve, and the Emory Barnes & Noble bookstore’s textbook rental program. Please visit the ATTM page for more details.
