How We Can Help

The Emory University Scholarly Communications Office (SCO) offers a variety of services for Emory faculty, staff, and students. We also coordinate and support two open access repositories and offer funding to make Emory authors’ research available in eligible open access venues.

Our Services

We’re available to answer your questions about copyright, open access publishing, open education, and more.

  • Copyright: We offer assistance with questions on many copyright and related issues, including fair use, classroom guidelines, how to obtain permissions for scholarly publications, identifying copyright holders, author agreements and book contracts, and more.
  • Open access: We provide expertise on all questions related to open access (OA) publishing, including a basic introduction to OA, finding OA content, understanding best practices for OA, openly sharing your research, and evaluating the quality of OA journals and publishers.
  • Open educational practices: These practices center on engaging in open pedagogy and finding and using open educational resources, which are openly licensed learning materials that are free in digital format.
  • Workshops: Each fall and spring, we offer a few sessions of "Copyright for Theses and Dissertations" to help students with copyright questions as they prepare to submit their capstone documents to the Emory Theses and Dissertations platform. In addition, specialized workshops tailored to a specific focus or topic are available by request. For more information, please contact the Scholarly Communications Office at

Open Access Repositories

Our office supports two open access repositories that preserve and provide access to the intellectual output of Emory University.

  • Emory Theses and Dissertations (ETDs): This platform is an open access repository of Emory alumni theses and dissertations. We coordinate the ETD system and offer consultations on copyright issues pertaining to theses and dissertations, such as permissions and using previously copyrighted materials. Please contact us for more information.
  • OpenEmory: An open access repository of Emory faculty works, including journal articles, books, book chapters, conference papers, posters, presentations, and reports. Please contact us for assistance submitting your work to OpenEmory.

Emory University Libraries provides funds for Emory authors who publish in eligible open access journals and books.

  • Open Access Publishing Fund: Provides funds for Emory authors to publish in eligible open access (OA) journals and books when no alternative funding is available. Faculty and currently enrolled students who meet the eligibility criteria are all eligible to apply for funds.
